Respiratory Care Associate

Position Summary:
The Respiratory Care Associate provides a limited variety of therapeutic respiratory care services in accordance with the Oklahoma Respiratory Care Practice Act, regulated by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. This position requires population specific competencies. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.

Essential Functions:
The Respiratory Care Associate responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for patient care on general floor care areas, excluding all critical care patients, except under direct observations, e.g. assisting a therapist
  • Under strict supervision institutes a limited variety of diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services to various patient types
    (geriatrics/adult/pediatric/neonatal), i.e. IPPB, aerosol therapy, chest physiotherapy, oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, sputum collection, specialty gas delivery, arterial blood gas/capillary sampling and analysis, CPR and airway management techniques, manual resuscitation, non-invasive ventilator support, transport support, and pharmaceutical agent delivery
  • Transports equipment and supplies to patient care areas as needed

Accountability:
The Respiratory Care Associate is accountable to the Supervisor and Chief Therapist of the Respiratory Care Department.

Environmental Conditions:
Moderate exposure to hazardous risks, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, chemicals. Potential for bodily injury related to lifting and incidents of workplace violence. Must follow universal safety precautions. Exposed to constant interruptions, noise, disagreeable odors, and assorted chemicals. May have multiple floors assigned per shift. May be required to be on call status.

Qualifications:

  • 3 years recent full time experience in providing respiratory services at INTEGRIS Health
  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner License
  • The incumbent may work under a temporary letter to practice issued by OSBMLS until the Board meets to issue their Respiratory Care Practitioner License
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (Verbal/Written)

Student Only:

  • Requires the incumbent be currently attending an accredited respiratory care program and hold a Provisional Respiratory Care Practitioner License, issued by the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (OSBMLS). The incumbent may work under a temporary letter to practice issued by OSBMLS until the board meets to issue their Provisional Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (Written/Verbal).
  • Must provide a copy of the "Verification of Student Status" form required to obtain their Provisional license. Their instructor must complete the "Student Task Proficiency List" on this form.
  • If incumbent has a provisional license, the incumbent must possess a minimum of the following skills with demonstrated proficiency in the lab and/or clinical setting by recognized instructor/evaluator in compliance with Provisional license of the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure & Supervision: - Metered Dose Inhaler medication administration - Small (or large) volume nebulizer medication administration - IPPB with medication administration - Humidity and aerosol therapy with bland solutions - Medical gas administration (nasal cannula, simple mask, venturi masks, partial and non-rebreathing masks) - Respiratory mechanics - Incentive Spirometry - Suctioning - Pulse oximetry - Chest physiotherapy ' - CPR - Arterial/capillary blood gas analysis (may include electrolytes) - Arterial blood gas/capillary sampling - Non-invasive ventilation (CPAP, BiPAP)
