The R&D Software Engineering Manager plays an important role, driving and fostering a culture of innovation within the department while assisting the R&D Manager to plan and manage R&D activities and resources. In this position, you will support the development of projects and identify the budget for a specific functional area. Reporting to the R&D Analytical Technology Manager, you will be in charge of R&D Engineers in order to meet the requirements of product development projects.

Your responsibilities

  • Lead and manage complex projects and coordinate work of multi location and cross functional team/s. Motivate and monitor internal and/or external resources to accomplish all tasks and milestones.
  • Coach and mentor R&D (Research and Development) team members and support professional development and talent pipeline.
  • Ensure projects follow sound methodology and execution practices in accordance with standard ABB internal procedures as well as external standards that influence activities and targets.
  • Cross collaboration with other ABB R&D sites and platforms available to support the NPI (New Product Introductions) development; coordinate activities with product and R&D tech manager to align on goals and priorities with taking ownership of the deliveries.
  • Develop, manage, and expand relationships with stakeholders, internal functions, Corporate Research Centers and external relevant parties (example customers, academia). Provide proposals for possible partnerships.
  • Ensure transparency around teams, unforeseen results/events and identified risks and ensure that they are properly managed and communicated.
  • Ensure understanding of customer value in the projects and acts to ensure customer satisfaction and manage expectations. Take into consideration requirements and demands coming from customers and from internally within ABB.
Your background

  • Bachelor's degree and/or Master's degree in Software or Computer Engineering or information systems and minimum 10 years of knowledge of managing embedded development teams, good understanding of software development models, cyber security.
  • Experience taking embedded products from concept through to production.
  • Experience planning and coordinating projects with cross functional teams.
  • Experience managing external & offshore contractors.
  • Experience working with multiple releases & projects for multiple products and in coordination & collaboration with Other Program Managers.
  • Good knowledge of Business Gate Model and Quality Processes.
  • Oil and Gas industry experience a plus.
  • Sound knowledge of Waterfall, Agile methodologies, certifications in Scrum is preferred.
  • Familiar with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) development processes/procedures desired
  • Familiar with the development activities/processes required by the software/hardware discipline.
  • A solution focused approach and strong written and spoken communication skills. Proficiency in English is required.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
