Overview

The SBA Underwriter delivers detailed quantitative and qualitative credit analysis and underwriting for SBA 7a and SBA 504 loan applications submitted by the SBA Business Development Officers. This role analyzes, underwrites, and recommends credit decisions according to the Loan Policy and SBA Standard Operating Procedures with minimal turn-around times. The Underwriter is responsible for delivering a credit recommendation that meets all SBA requirements; including but not limited to eligibility, loan structure, and collateral requirements, in addition to sound credit judgement that adheres to credit policy.


Responsibilities

  • Underwrite quality SBA 7a and SBA 504 loan applications to comply with SBA guidelines.
  • Exercise sound credit underwriting skills to recommend a credit decision including SBA eligibility.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the bank's lending policies and procedures of a range of loan types including, but not limited to, SBA loans and owner occupied commercial real estate loans.
  • Review all applicable transaction documents and follow up on loans submitted with recommendation for approval or decline.
  • Complete formal credit loan approval memos including preparing a cash flow model and other financial spreadsheets and analysis.
  • Analyze financial and guarantor statements, collateral, and business plans and projections.
  • Prepare cash flow model, determine valuation, and other third-party report requirements, as well as identify required closing conditions to ensure loans are appropriately structured and meet credit requirements for lending quality and compliance as determined by the Bank's Credit Policy.
  • Partner with SBA Business Development Officers, SBA Loan Services, and Credit Risk Officers in managing loans and pipeline.
  • Use independent judgement to assess risk by identifying primary risks, issues and mitigants regarding extensions of credit.
  • Review proposed loan structure and determines actions needed to sufficiently mitigate and manage risk.
  • Communicate with prospective borrowers to facilitate sound independent underwriting of prospective projects. Collaborate with SBA Business Development Officers to develop acceptable loan structures prior to formal submission to underwriting.
  • Assist SBA Portfolio Managers and SBA Servicing Team with actions that require credit decisioning or analysis.
  • Make independent recommendations regarding credit risk supported by comprehensive analysis.
  • Interact with internal and external clients while providing extraordinary service.
  • Build trusted, collaborative and supporting relationships with internal and external business partners.
  • Represent the Bank and Credit Administration team in a highly professional manner.
  • Complete job assignments in a professional, timely and efficient manner; organize and prioritize work.
  • Maintain confidentiality; adhere to CrossFirst Bank policies and procedures; comply with laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Reliable and predictable attendance; both onsite and remote.

Qualifications

  • Three or more years of dedicated SBA underwriting and analysis experience for 7a and 504 loans.
  • Experience in SBA lending programs, with knowledge of the most recent SBA standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to utilize diverse data analysis processes, techniques, and tools to analyze and interpret loan related data.
  • Knowledge of financial statement analysis and demonstrated ability to identify and mitigate key risks.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective business relationships, internally and externally.
  • Computer literate with strong MS Excel and MS Word skills.
  • Bachelor's degree with exposure to Accounting, Finance or Business courses is preferred or equivalent work experience.
