Position Overview
The Protein Structure and X-ray Crystallography Laboratory (PSXL) is a core laboratory that focuses on the 3-dimensional structure determination of proteins, using X-ray crystallography and CryoEM, for collaborators' projects and extramurally funded research projects managed by the PSXL Director. As such, the PSXL manages all tasks in the structure determination process including initial construct design, assistance with protein purification, crystallization, X-ray diffraction data collection, structure solution/refinement and structure analysis. The position will involve performing laboratory tasks necessary to express and purify protein samples as well as setup and monitoring of crystallization experiments and computational crystallography, depending on experience, for collaborator's projects in the KU research community along with external collaborators. Job Description
85% - Conduct research tasks for PSXL projects
  • Perform and manage laboratory tasks involving all aspects of protein production including construct design, cloning, protein expression testing, protein purification and quality analysis.
  • Additional tasks include the setup of protein crystallization trials and monitoring these experiments.
  • Perform some protein structure determination under the guidance of experienced staff members.

5% - Laboratory operations
  • Assist in the daily operations of the PSXL which includes maintaining the inventory of consumable supplies, preparing stock solutions and media, general laboratory cleanliness and introducing users to the laboratory guidelines.
  • Provide advice to the Director regarding areas to improve/enhance the laboratory's capabilities.

5% - Documentation/Analysis
  • Preparation and analysis of scientific research materials for services performed.
  • Devising research methods and plans for carrying out protein expression/purification and crystallization experiments.
  • Maintaining detailed notes and records pertaining to all laboratory work.
  • Assistance in writing detailed final reports for collaborator's projects.
  • Communicate with collaborators of the PSXL regarding their projects.

5% - Training
  • Provide training to junior researchers in the methods utilized for protein production and structural biology methods with input from senior staff members.






Position Requirements
The work location for this position is on-site, KU Lawrence, Structural Biology Center, 1045. Lawrence, KS
Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in structural biology, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, chemistry or related field and three years of related experience OR a Master's degree in structural biology, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience in either protein production or protein structure determination methods.
  2. Experience in managing multiple projects as evidenced in application materials.
  3. A record of published, peer-reviewed research in areas related to the position.
